Overnight, the US markets ended marginally in the green and the Asian markets are currently trading mixed.
The Sensex is quoting at 16,996, weaker by 54 points, and the Nifty is at 5047, down 14 points.
IT is the leading sectoral gainer on the BSE, continuing from the strength seen on the previous day.
The leading Sensex gainers are Sun Pharma (stronger by 1.2% at Rs 1,474), Infosys (higher by 1.1% at Rs 2,425) and M&M (firmer by 1.1% at Rs 1,045).
Bharti, Wipro and TCS have added up to 1% each.
Among the top losers, Tata Steel has shed 1.6% at Rs 529, SBI has weakened by 0.9% to Rs 2,329 and L&T has given up 0.9% and is trading at Rs 1,640.
Hero Honda, DLF, ICICI Bank and HDFC have lost up to 1% each.
The market breadth is strong. Out of 1,498 stocks traded on the BSE, there are 908 advancing stocks as against 545 declines.
